Celes is exactly who and what she lets herself on to be. No frills, no subtleties, nothing. At times she can seem severe to the point of being intimidating, and it is because of those qualities that she has been given the position that she currently holds. She holds quite a bit of pride in what she does, as well as in her kingdom, and in some ways is blind to how Gestahl's actions may hurt others. She believes that people need to be managed, that if they are left to their own devices that they will fail. Give someone an inch and they will walk all over you. To Celes, that is completely unacceptable. A woman of action, she would much rather act than talk idly, letting the things that she does speak for her.

Dubbed the ice queen by some of her underlings, she has a hard time showing her emotion, and at times can be very withdrawn. This comes form her upbringing, living a militaristic lifestyle from as far back as she can remember. The military has no room for human error, and as such neither does she. Emotions tend to get in the way, muddle your train of thought and make you hesitate at the most crucial of moments. She would much rather do away with those emotions, but there are times that she does get carried away.

Known to have a bit of a temper, when given the opportunity, Celes can be quite the firebrand, especially when it comes to what she believes in. Her beliefs are what she clings to at her core, what drive her to be the kind of woman that she is, and she feels that she is powerless without them. People are not what drive her at this time, but rather ideals. The thought that her orders are correct, as that is the only life that she knows. Should that be pulled out from under her, she crumbles a bit. Her faith is surprisingly fragile, and should something shatter that conviction she loses herself a bit. She is strong because she feels like she has to be, not necessarily because she wants to.

That said, when given the chance to draw strength from others--if she could ever let herself get over her lone wolf complex--she can be a force to be reckoned with. There is very little that this woman cannot do with the right incentive. However, due to her training she is, admittedly, somewhat ignorant to the thoughts of others. She does not understand simple things like familial ties or love, choosing rather to shrug them off then come to understand and relate to them. This may be the easy way out. If she were to push herself to better understand others, she may lose her nerve. She is also somewhat awkward due to being very sheltered as a youth. Raised by one man, she hardly thinks of him as family, but rather another member of the military personnel.

Thanks to efforts by Locke, Terra and the rest of the Returners, however, Celes was able to temper a bit of that edge to her. The two--especially Locke--have endeared themselves to her, and they, along with the other Returners, are extremely important to her. After being separated from the rest of the party, as well as the death of Cid, Celes fell to rock bottom. It cannot be stressed enough how important Locke is to her change in character, despite the fact that she would never admit it. Finding his bandana was what set her off on her mission to find the others, pushed her forward to keep searching despite impossible odds. Celes is strong to be sure, and likely had that strength in her the entire time, but needed the push to realize it.

It was in flirting with death that the general truly became strong, and the cold-hearted, methodical tendencies of the runic knight gave way to something she hadn't felt before: hope. Still tenacious, stubborn and headstrong, she allows herself to smile, to laugh, and to breathe a bit easier. She is the catalyst that brings the party back together after being torn apart by ruin, and, above all else, she manages to keep hope and faith despite impossible odds. She is a fighter; what she fights for, however, has changed.
